The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lance Corporal Ronald George Shubert (MCSN: 2005183), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 21 October 1965, while engaged in a patrol near Chu Lai, Lance Corporal Shubert’s platoon was suddenly subjected to intense automatic weapons fire from two sides. With utter disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Shubert, armed only with an M-79 grenade launcher, fearlessly advanced directly toward one of the enemy positions. Adeptly moving through two barbed wire fences and a deep trench filled with water and cacti, all the while subjected to the withering automatic weapons fire, he continued firing accurately at the Viet Cong emplacement. With exceptional presence of mind when his ammunition was expended, he grabbed the rifle of a wounded comrade and continued the attack until contact was broken. Lance Corporal Shubert’s intrepid courage in the face of extreme peril undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his fellow Marines, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
