The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John D. Sampsel (MCSN: 2478777), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company H, Second Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 14 January 1969, during Operation BOLD MARINER, Private First Class Sampsel’s squad was conducting a patrol approximately eight hundred meters from its platoon position when the Marines came under intense hostile fire which wounded every member of the squad. Ignoring his painful injuries, Private First Class Sampsel boldly volunteered to return alone to the friendly position for reinforcements. Disregarding his own safety, he fearlessly maneuvered through the encircling enemy force and upon reaching his platoon’s perimeter, he informed his platoon commander of the situation. After receiving medical aid, he unhesitatingly assumed the point position and undaunted by hostile sniper fire, led the relief force to his squad’s location. Continuing his determined efforts, he then comforted his injured comrades and assisted in their medical evacuation. His heroic and timely actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of his fellow Marines. By his courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger, Private First Class Sampsel upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
