The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lance Corporal Lynell Neblett (MCSN: 2351619), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with the Second Platoon, Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced) in the Republic of Vietnam on 29 September 1967. While the Second Platoon was conducting a search-and-destroy mission in Quang Nam Province, the point fire team commanded by Lance Corporal Neblett was taken under a heavy volume of Viet Cong fire. The enemy fire was so intense that his team was pinned down and he was seriously wounded by the initial burst of enemy fire. Lance Corporal Neblett, realizing that any hesitation could be fatal to the remainder of the platoon, rushed to the enemy position, firing a full magazine in the process. While stopping momentarily to reload his rifle, he was mortally wounded. Due to his exceptional ability and complete disregard for his own life, Lance Corporal Neblett was able to relieve the pressure of the enemy ambush and immediately clear the way for the gun team to set up and deliver a withering fire into the enemy position, which succeeded in routing the enemy. The corpsman was able to reach the wounded and give first aid. Lance Corporal Neblett’s outstanding personal courage undoubtedly saved the lives of his team members and reduced the number of casualties suffered by his entire platoon. His courageous actions and selfless dedication to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
