The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Wesley A. Moyle (MCSN: 2336949), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Fire Team Leader with Company B, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced) during operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 December 1967, while deployed in a company-sized ambush northwest of Con Thien, Private First Class Moyle’s platoon engaged North Vietnamese soldiers, inflicting several casualties, and was advancing to search for weapons and documents when it suddenly came under intense mortar, automatic weapons and small-arms fire from a well entrenched, numerically superior enemy force. In the initial attack, his squad, serving as the point for the platoon, sustained several casualties and was temporarily pinned down. Without hesitation, Private First Class Moyle fearlessly exposed himself to intense enemy fire as he moved forward across the open, fire-swept terrain to assist the wounded Marines. Firing his weapon as he advanced, he daringly attracted enemy fire to himself, thereby enabling the besieged Marines to aid their wounded companions. Upon reaching the casualties, Private First Class Moyle moved from one man to another, shielding them, rendering medical aid and assisting them to covered positions. Having recovered four casualties from the exposed area, Private First Class Moyle was gallantly returning for another injured Marine when he came under concentrated enemy fire and was mortally wounded. By his extraordinary courage, bold initiative, and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Moyle served to inspire those who observed him and undoubtedly saved several Marine lives. His great personal valor reflected the highest credit upon himself and enhanced the finest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
