The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Charles Frederic Humphrey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 11 July 1877, while serving with 4th U.S. Artillery, in action at Clearwater, Idaho. First Lieutenant Humphrey voluntarily and successfully conducted, in the face of a withering fire, a party which recovered possession of an abandoned howitzer and two Gatling guns lying between the lines a few yards from the Indians.
