The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Lieutenant Robert Booth Clark (NSN: 0-84103), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Commander of a Navy Patrol Plane in Patrol Squadron FOURTEEN (VP-14), 0n 26 August 1942, when he reported the position of an enemy task force north of the Solomon Islands in the face of a determined attack by eight enemy Zero fighter planes. Through his superb handling of his Patrol Plane and taking advantage of every opportunity his waist gunners were able to shoot down two of the enemy planes and drive off the others. Despite serious damage to his plane and casualties among his crew he lightened ship and made a difficult crash landing at On tong, Java. He improvised a crew routing to take care of the meager resources of the island and of such help as the natives could offer during the seven days prior to rescue. His courage, skill, leadership and judgment were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
