The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private Donald L. Evans (MCSN: 403382), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action on 23 January 1943, at Guadalcanal. While a member of an anti-sniper patrol along a road, Private Evans attempted, above and beyond his particular duties, to evacuate three wounded Marines and a wounded hospital corpsman from the road to a place of safety. While so doing he was under extremely accurate sniper fire and was severely wounded by a bullet through the chest.
