The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arvin A. Williams (MCSN: 324204), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines (Reinforced), Fifth Amphibious Corps in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 28 June 1944. When a stiff fire fight occurred during a patrol against a strong pocket of hostile resistance retarding the advance of his entire battalion, Private First Class Williams courageously charged a machine gun position and while subjected to enemy fire from the mutually supporting weapons of the strong point, killed the crew and them jumped into the emplacement and destroyed the gun. Immediately returning to his unit he tirelessly assisted other members of the patrol in destroying additional Japanese gun emplacements. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
