Edwin Wheeler graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts and then,, in 1941 while attending New York University Law School, enlisted in the Marine Corps as was commissioned a second Lieutenant. While serving in Vietnam he was medically evacuated in 1970 due to injuries received in the crash of his command helicopter. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Major General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Captain Edwin Bliss Wheeler (MCSN: 0-7807), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action while serving with the First Marine Raider Battalion at New Georgia, Solomon Islands on 10 July 1943, when he directed his company with such skill and aggressiveness that heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy and seven of their machine guns were captured. On 20 July 1943, commanding a composite company, he directed the company with such courage heavy casualties were again inflicted on the enemy.
