The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank P. Walter (MCSN: 410632), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Battery, First Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands on 3 August 1944. When a Japanese soldier approached his position during his security watch, Private First Class Walter instantly realized that carbine fire would endanger the lives of his comrades and unhesitatingly tackling the enemy, forced him into a position where he could be killed from an adjacent post when there was a safe field of fire. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
