The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class William C. Tompkins (MCSN: 402794), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Rifleman in Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced) in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands on 17 September 1944. Voluntarily moving forward to an exposed sector on a coral ridge which was being subjected to intense hostile mortar, hand grenade and rifle fire, Private First Class Tompkins fired into the face of the enemy with such devastating effectiveness that their attack was momentarily halted. Sighting two Japanese in Marine helmets he quickly recognized them as members of the hostile force and again exposed himself to fire upon them. Later, with his squad leader wounded he unhesitatingly assumed command and skillfully led the unit in maintaining its defensive position throughout the night. His outstanding courage, daring initiative and valiant fighting spirit in the face of vicious enemy fire reflect great credit upon Private First Class Tompkins and the United States Naval Service.
