The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Edmond A. Todd (MCSN: 962540), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader in a Rifle Platoon of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 14 June 1945. Wounded when the enemy launched the first of a series of counter attacks on a newly-seized ridge, Corporal Todd refused evacuation and when the Japanese made a second fanatical charge, fired his automatic weapon from a completely exposed position to repel the assault single-handedly. By his heroic conduct he inspired his comrades to crush the last efforts of the enemy later in the morning and only then was the seriousness of his wound discovered and his immediate evacuation ordered. Corporal Todd’s unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
