Horace Wade began military service as an enlisted man in the Arkansas National Guard in 1934. He received his wings and commission in 1938. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, earning a Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross among other awards, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. From 1972 to 1973 he served as the 13th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He retired in 1973 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
