After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Marvin McNickle transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. Both he and his twin brother, Melvin McNickle, reached flag rank in the Air Force, Melvin retiring as a Major General and Marvin McNickle retiring in 1972 as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General.
