The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Air Corps) Edward Trebell Waters (ASN: 0-730683), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a P-38 Fighter Pilot of the 96th Fighter Squadron, 82d Fighter Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in action against the enemy in aerial combat in the North African Theater of Operations. On 20 May 1943, Lieutenant Waters’ squadron escorted twenty-four B-25-s over Villacidro Airdrome. At the commencement of a successful bomb run, fifteen enemy fighters attacked. Lieutenant Waters show down one ME-109 and took conspicuous part in driving the enemy away from the bombers. During the running fight eight hostile aircraft were destroyed without loss to our forces. Lieutenant Waters’ courage and skill in combat have reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
