During World War II, Herman Visscher became a U.S. Army Air Forces ACE, credited with shooting down 5 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force. Flying combat in the Korean War, he was credited with shooting down one more enemy aircraft for a two-war total of 6 aerial victories. He retired in 1966 as a U.S. Air Force Major.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Herman W. Visscher (ASN: 0-496093), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Fighter Pilot of P-38 Fighter Plane of the 97th Fighter Squadron, 82d Fighter Group, FIFTEENTH Air Force, in the North African Theater of Operations. On 8 February 1943, Lieutenant Visscher led one flight of his squadron in escorting eighteen B-25’s over Gabes Airdrome. Thirty enemy fighters attacked persistently, during, and after the successful bomb run. Lieutenant Visscher shot down one ME-109 and throughout a long running battle in which eight enemy fighters were destroyed, played a prominent part in repulsing many attacks against our bombers. Lieutenant Visscher’s determination and courageous leadership have reflected great credit upo0n himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
