The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Hoyt M. Stewart (MCSN: 0-31109), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 7 July 1944. During a fierce enemy attack on his battery’s position, Second Lieutenant Stewart fearlessly exposed himself to intense machine-gun and rifle fire in order to organize defenses and keep them constantly supplied with ammunition. Courageous and daring under enemy fire, he was leading reinforcements to isolated outposts when mortally wounded before he could reach his objective. Second Lieutenant Stewart’s inspiring valor and unyielding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
