The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clyde Shivers, Jr. (MCSN: 347451), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader in a Platoon of Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, Fifth Marines Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 4 March 1945. When his platoon was pinned down by exceptionally heavy mortar, machine-gun and rifle fire, Corporal Shivers volunteered to return to the rear to guide tanks forward. Although the route to the rear was under heavy enemy artillery and mortar fire, he returned to the tank area and guided the vehicles to his unit’s position. Despite the heavy hostile fire, he directed the fire of the tanks until the Japanese were completely silenced. Guiding the tanks toward the platoon objective, he directed their fire on enemy emplacements, thereby enabling his unit to advance and accomplish its mission. By his courage and daring initiative, Corporal Shivers upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
