The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John E. Price (MCSN: 890594), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a rifleman of Company G, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against Japanese forces during the assault on enemy held Peleliu, Palau Islands on 19 September 1944. After the patrol of which he was volunteer member had fought its way to the top of a commanding hill in the vicinity of Bloody Nose ridge more than one hundred yards in front of friendly lines, Private First Class Price volunteered to signal his company for reinforcements and standing on a ledge fully exposed to enemy fire contacted the company by means of semaphore. Although knocked down by the concussion of an enemy mortar shell which landed near him he struggled to his feet and completed the message despite all attempts of the enemy to dislodge him with rifle and machine gun fire. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
