The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant James P. Passons (MCSN: 0-17723), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a platoon leader attached to the First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group on 17 June 1944. Although wounded himself in the cross fire from enemy troops defending the high ridge under attack, First Lieutenant Passons courageously refused evacuation and taking charge of an adjacent platoon whose leader had become a casualty, valiantly led the two groups in a determined assault which resulted in the capture of his company’s objective. Immediately organizing his position he successfully directed his men in the repulsion of several enemy counter attacks throughout the remainder of the campaign until he was mortally wounded. First Lieutenant Passons’ inspiring leadership and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
