The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Benjamin F. Morris, Jr. (MCSN: 964972), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 3 May 1945. Detecting hostile barges attempting a counter-landing on the Island during predawn hours, Private Morris seized an automatic rifle and, rushing forward to an exposed position on the beach, delivered intense and accurate fire that momentarily halted the enemy. By his daring initiative, he inflicted numerous casualties to bring about confusion and panic among the Japanese, thereby enabling his platoon to maneuver quickly into an effective defense position. His gallant fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
