The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Travis Morgan (MCSN: 365821), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 17 September 1944. Assuming command of his squad after the squad leader and several men were wounded during an assault on strongly fortified enemy positions, Private First Class Morgan led his men in a dash across fiercely contested ground and, driving the enemy from their defensive positions, destroyed many of them. Continuing in command of the squad through this and subsequent engagements, he contributed materially to the successful completion of each mission. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
