The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Jym W. Mitchell (MCSN: 820440), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Group Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 18 March 1945. When a wounded comrade fell in a direct line of hostile fire, Corporal Mitchell crawled and crept for a distance of about thirty yards into enemy-held positions under a hail of heavy machine-gun fire from a well-concealed, heavily fortified Japanese position. Reaching the casualty, he carried him bodily to a position of safety where immediate medical attention could be administered. By his courageous initiative in evacuating his wounded comrade, he undoubtedly saved the man’s life, and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
