The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Roy L. McDaniel, Jr. (MCSN: 474976), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Company A, First Medical Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, from 15 to 23 September 1944. Volunteering to go to the front lines and aid the hospital corpsmen who were hard pressed on account of the many casualties, Private First Class McDaniel received instructions in administering blood plasma and morphine and in first aid measures while under heavy enemy sniper and mortar fire, thereafter personally administering first aid and removing to safety one hundred and four wounded comrades under heavy enemy fire before collapsing from sheer physical exhaustion at the end of a three-day period. Volunteering once more to return to the front as an ambulance driver on the following day, he constantly drove his ambulance through heavy enemy sniper fire while evacuating the wounded from 19 to 23 September. His courage, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
