The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Platoon Sergeant Cecil M. McArthur (MCSN: 381695), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Tank Commander serving with the Fourth Tank Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 to 22 June 1944. While preparing to dismount after moving in column to a forward position from which to support the infantry, Platoon Sergeant McArthur was suddenly fired upon by Japanese snipers and, completely disregarding his own personal safety, unhesitatingly engaged the enemy with his pistol, steadfastly returning the hostile fire and providing effective protection for the other tank commanders and officers until he was mortally wounded. Platoon Sergeant McArthur’s splendid initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and self-sacrificing efforts were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
