The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Guido A. Marengo, Jr. (MCSN: 0-9721), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Artillery Liaison Officer of the Third Battalion, Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 21 February to 14 March 1945. Demonstrating outstanding ability, Captain Marengo efficiently coordinated all artillery fires requested by his battalion and, on 6 March, when one of his forward observers had difficulty in registering defensive fires for the night, advanced to the front lines to assist him. Because of rocky ridges and draws in front of the Battalion, good observation of artillery fire was impossible unless an observer could work his way to the top of an exposed rock located to the right of the company. Attempting to adjust fire from this point after the forward observer was fatally wounded and the radioman injured, Captain Marengo remained in this dangerous position in the face of accurate enemy fire for at least ten minutes until he had registered his night defensive fires. His leadership, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
