The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Arthur R. Maher (MCSN: 280678), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Second Marines, Second Marine, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 21 November 1943. When an imminent bombardment by the Japanese threatened an area occupied by friendly troops, Platoon Sergeant Maher fearlessly exposed himself to shattering rifle and machine-gun fire to semaphore an urgent message to an artillery unit thereby preventing the enemy from launching an attack. By his daring initiative, dauntless courage and outstanding fortitude in risking his life for others, Platoon Sergeant Maher contributed to the saving of many men who otherwise might have perished and his loyal devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval service.
