The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Pio R. Magliaro (MCSN: 439977), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands from 1 April to 13 June 1945. Assigned to the dangerous mission of destroying enemy caves, many of which were defended by well-concealed and entrenched hostile forces, Private First Class Magliaro personally advanced on several occasions in the face of Japanese gunfire from these caves to demolish them with grenades or demolition charges. Voluntarily attempting the destruction of a particularly difficult enemy stronghold on 13 June, he courageously crawled to an exposed position near the cave and had almost accomplished his mission when discovered and critically wounded by hostile gunfire. His courageous leadership and unhesitating response to an extremely difficult and dangerous assignment served as an inspiration to his fellow marines and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
