The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Brice Maddox (MCSN: 227091), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as First Sergeant of Company B, First Marine Raider Battalion, First Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the night of 13 – 14 September 1942. When a strong enemy attack developed against the company’s position on a ridge south of Henderson Field, First Sergeant Maddox moved to an exposed point and, through the use of a portable radio, skillfully directed the fire of support artillery which proved to be a major factor in breaking up the initial assault of the enemy. After an artillery forward observer began directing the artillery fire, he moved to an exposed flank of the company and, with the assistance of a few men held this position in the face of savage thrusts by a numerically superior force. Later that same night he braved intense hostile fire to encourage other units of the organization and rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer when a local withdrawal was ordered by the Battalion Commander. His leadership, courage under fire and un-wavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
