The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal John J. Lunsford (MCSN: 325940), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Leader of a Demolition Team serving with the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, on 18 September 1944. Landing with the first wave of troops in the face of heavy mortar, artillery and small arms fire, Corporal Lunsford observed an assault platoon being held down by a concentrated barrage from two enemy pillboxes immediately to their front. Making a quick reconnaissance of the strongly defended approach to the hostile positions, he defied the terrific defensive fire, leading his demolition team in a rush assault and advancing with determined aggressiveness until struck down by the enemy. Corporal Lunsford’s fearless initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty under the most dangerous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
