The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Tiny F. Luinstra (MCSN: 281079), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 22 November 1943. When a number of the enemy infiltrated his company lines during the night, Sergeant Luinstra, on his own initiative, boldly advanced alone to the penetration and, delivering a bold, determined attack against the Japanese at perilously close range, succeeded in destroying the position with his accurate rifle fire. By his daring initiative, his indomitable fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of grave danger, Sergeant Luinstra contributed to the saving of many lives and to the repulse of subsequent counter-attacks by a fanatic enemy. His unwavering devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
