The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Field Cook Leonard J. Lotka (MCSN: 452873), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Stretcher Bearer with Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 9 May 1945. Coolly alert as he exposed himself to continuous and relentless hostile machine-gun and mortar fire, Field Cook Lotka skillfully directed the evacuation of wounded Marinas from the fighting area to a forward aid station. Then, observing six men lying wounded and helpless on a dangerous ridge, he unhesitatingly pressed forward in disregard of all personal danger and, throwing smoke grenades in the face of the enemy, succeeded in covering the removal of the stricken Marines until all six were carried to safety. Fatally wounded while descending the ridge, Field Cook Lotka, by his resolute fortitude, valiant leadership and unwavering devotion to duty during a critical phase to the fierce action, had rendered valiant service and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
