Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 18 (March 18, 1943)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George R. Lohmiller (MCSN: 261742), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, between 18 August and 12 September 1942. When fires were started in munitions and gasoline dumps, Sergeant Lohmiller, unhesitatingly and with utter disregard of flying shell fragments from exploding ammunition, assisted in fighting and controlling the fires in the face of sustained enemy assault. His cool and courageous action in a critical situation was instrumental in reducing to a minimum the damage inflicted by enemy bombs and naval shell fire, and in saving many lives and much valuable equipment.
