The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Bonnie A. Little (MCSN: 0-9706), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Second Amphibian Tractor Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, 20 November 1943. Subjected to enemy fire at close range as the assault wave disembarked on a strongly fortified Japanese beachhead, Captain Little daringly pressed forward with his platoon, directing his tractor machine gunners in destroying the enemy emplacement. Although his driver and crew chief lost their lives during the intense action, he fearlessly carried on, personally driving the tractor to an effective landing on the beach before he himself was killed. His great personal valor, prompt action and heroic self-sacrifice in the face of grave peril contributed immeasurably to the success of our forces in that area and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
