The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Albert E. Lindbeck (MCSN: 415013), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Mine Removal Team of the Sixth Engineer Battalion, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 12 June 1945. When the tanks to which he was assigned were halted by a mined area forward of friendly lines while his team was clearing lanes through mine fields, Corporal Lindbeck voluntarily led his team forward across fire-swept terrain to open a passage for the advance of the tanks. As the increasing intensity of hostile fire interfered with the work of his unit, he deployed his men in effective firing positions with the result that three of the enemy and several automatic weapons were destroyed. Resuming his task, he continued removing mines until the mission was completed, thereby enabling the tank to advance and destroy strong enemy fortifications on the reverse slopes of knolls in the Croku Area and contributing materially to the advance of the infantry with comparatively few casualties. His initiative, skillful leadership and courageous conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
