The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Thad Q. Lewis (MCSN: 261496), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 15 June 1944. With his unit pinned down by withering hostile fire from a heavily fortified bunker, Sergeant Lewis fearlessly braved the enemy’s concentrated machine-gun and sniper fire to gain a favorable attack position and, boldly charging the emplacement alone, succeeded in destroying the bunker and killing all Japanese troops in the immediate area. By his inspiring standing fortitude, Sergeant Lewis contributed materially to the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold, and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
