The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Bobbie D. Lewis (MCSN: 426453), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader in a Rifle Platoon of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 1 May 1945. Observing two of his men wounded and lying in exposed positions, Sergeant Lewis braved intense enemy sniper and machine-gun fire to crawl to their sides and administer first aid. Although wounded in this action he disregarded his own extreme pain and carried his wounded comrades through the heavy fire to safety. His coolness under fire and his courageous actions reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Lewis and the United States Naval Service.
