The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Martin Levit (MCSN: 0-7814), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while attached to the Third Marine Raider Battalion during a landing on Puruata Island, Solomon Islands 1 November 1943. Informed that two severely wounded Marines were lying in an enemy position, Captain Levit promptly organized a rescue party and, although fully aware that this area would soon be fired upon by friendly artillery, proceeded into the hazardous zone. Unhesitatingly advancing under fire, he succeeded in evacuating the man who had not yet succumbed to his injuries. Captain Levit’s great personal valor and courageous initiative in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
