The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles E. Leigan (MCSN: 540689), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, Fifth Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Fleet Marine Force, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 15 June 1944. Diligently repairing two tractors while awaiting Corporal Leigan was hit by enemy shellfire and, although severely wounded, continued in his work until the machines were in operation. Returning to his own tractor, he assisted fourteen wounded men aboard and skillfully maneuvered the vehicle to a hospital ship despite a damaged steering gear and, after aiding in unloading the men, refused medical attention until all of his passengers had been treated. His outstanding fortitude, courageous initiative and grave concern for the safety of others saved the lives of several men who otherwise might have perished and reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Leigan and the United States Naval Service.
