The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Harold Legg (MCSN: 461445), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. With his amphibian tractor disabled in an isolated, fire-swept area during fierce hostilities on D-Day, Private First Class Legg boldly faced the enemy’s shattering artillery and small-arms fire to man the vehicle’s gun and, despite severe wounds received during the bitter action, fought gallantly on, directing a steady stream of intense, accurate shellfire against hostile positions to cover the disembarkation of his comrades and enable them to deploy without casualty. By his dauntless fighting spirit, his outstanding fortitude and cool and courageous action in the face of grave peril, Private First Class Legg contributed materially to the success of our operations against a fanatic enemy in this vital campaign and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
