The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel August Larson (MCSN: 0-4615), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer and later as Commanding Officer of the Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, from 17 May to 21 June 1945. Under heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Colonel Larson continuously conducted reconnaissance from front line positions and personally supervised reorganization of badly depleted units of the Regiment. On 9 June, he unhesitatingly proceeded from the Regimental Observation Post under heavy hostile fire to a forward position from which he directed the reorganization of a battalion and the assault on Hill 55. By this blow, he brought about the complete destruction of the Japanese in that area and enabled all units in the Regimental zone of action to advance and seize their objectives, and contributed materially to the further advance of the Division in its successful attack on Oroku Peninsula. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Colonel Larson and the United States Naval Service.
