The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Edward B. Largey (MCSN: 856928), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman in Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, on 16 April 1945. Although painfully wounded while advancing with his company in an attack on a strongly held ridge, Private Largey courageously continued the advance up the precipitous slope in the face of heavy hostile fire and, using hand grenades, destroyed an enemy machine-gun emplacement, killing five enemy soldiers. By his heroic notion, he assisted materially in the seizure of the hostile position, and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
