The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Raymond Lacavera (MCSN: 557491), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Rocket Launcher Team of Company A, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 16 June 1945. When his platoon was suddenly subjected to hostile rifle and mortar fire which inflicted three casualties during an attack over extremely rough terrain along a pinnacled ridge, Private Lacavera immediately ran forward through hostile fire to an advantageous position and delivered effective fire on enemy emplacements. After all his ammunition was expended, he ran to one of the wounded Marines, secured an automatic rifle and again brought fire to bear on the enemy killing eight Japanese soldiers and neutralizing one mortar. By his coolness under fire and relentless fighting spirit, Private Lacavera enabled his platoon to continue its attack, thereby permitting his wounded comrades to be evacuated. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
