The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Carol C. Kiel (MCSN: 0-20099), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Supply Officer of the Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. When the movement of vehicles, carrying needed ammunition from the beach to the front lines was held up by an extensive mine field, First Lieutenant Kiel courageously walked through the hazardous area attempting to lead an amphibian truck to our advance troops. Although the vehicle was stopped when it ran over a mine, he returned to the beach, led another one through the field to the first truck and unloaded ammunition from one to the other, thereby making possible the supply of vital ammunition to the front lines. Later that night, when a large enemy counterattack was expected in the absence of an organized shore party, he directed boats into the beach by signaling them with a flashlight and supervised their unloading. First Lieutenant Kiel’s courage and devotion to duty under intense enemy fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
