The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain Raymond F. Kehoe, Jr. (MCSN: 0-10276), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Regimental Communications Officer attached to the Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 16 September 1944. When all communications with an assault battalion were put out of action during a heavy enemy counterattack, Captain Kehoe personally organized and led a repair party under an intense artillery and mortar barrage and, arriving at the source of the trouble, skillfully supervised the repairs, then courageously moved on to inspect radios at the battalion command post where he was mortally wounded by a hostile mortar shell. Captain Kehoe’s splendid initiative and expert technical ability enabled the battalion to maintain vital communications with other echelons, thereby assisting materially in stopping the enemy attack. His valiant devotion to duty in the face of grave peril was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
