The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Thomas Haynes Johnson (MCSN: 0-15497), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, 30 December 1943. Courageously endeavoring to locate enemy positions pinning down the right flank of his platoon, First Lieutenant Johnson unhesitatingly exposed himself to withering hostile fire, carrying out his duties with unwavering determination until fatally wounded. First Lieutenant Johnson’s daring initiative and inspiring devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
