The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunnery Sergeant Roy V. Johnson (MCSN: 251941), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Gunnery Sergeant of Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 25 and 26 July 1944. Locating a hostile artillery piece which was delivering effective fire on the company on his right during an attack on enemy positions on 25 July, Gunnery Sergeant Johnson directed effective fire on the target, thereby allowing the assault to continue. On another occasion when a determined hostile counterattack against the beachhead had penetrated the lines of the company on his right, he prevented a widening of the breach by killing four or five Japanese and, at dawn, counterattacked with fourteen men, killing the remaining enemy and restoring the lines. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
