The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Eric H. Johnson (MCSN: 522251), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 7 July 1944. Performing his essential tasks with resolute vigilance, Private First Class Johnson serviced and fired his heavy artillery piece without interruption despite frequent volleys of deadly machine-gun and small arms fire directed at his position and, remaining steadfast at his post as the hostilities increased, assisted materially in knocking out a powerful Japanese tank which was inflicting serious casualties on his section. Fatally struck down at his post by a savage burst of enemy fire, Private First Class Johnson, by his unfaltering skill, valiant fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of terrific opposition, contributed materially to the success of our forces during the Saipan operation, and his unwavering devotion to duty throughout upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
