The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Newton T. James, Jr. (MCSN: 0-20721), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached Detachment TWO, Commander Aircraft North Solomons, during the initial landing on enemy Japanese-held Treasury Islands, October 27, 1943. After landing safely on Stirling Island, Second Lieutenant James courageously set out by boat across Blanche Harbor to search for equipment vital to the defense of the island. Proceeding to the south side of Mono Island which was being heavily shelled by Japanese mortars, he was caught in the midst of enemy fire and mortally wounded. His personal valor and valiant devotion to the accomplishment of an important and hazardous mission were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
