The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Nelson C. Jacquays (MCSN: 903156), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gunner in a 37-mm. Gun Platoon of Weapons Company, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 9 March 1945. While his platoon was attached to an infantry company with the mission of filling a gap between it and the adjacent unit, Private First Class Jacquays noticed a wounded comrade lying beyond our front lines and wedged in between two racks. Voluntarily crossing open, bullet-swept terrain to go to the rescue of the man, he succeeded in reaching the stricken Marine and, after extricating him from the rocks, carried him back to a place of safety. His courage, daring and initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
